What better way to spend Christmas time with your family than to get absorbed in beautiful holiday narrative? I know there are numerous holiday-themed movies out there, so I’ve decided to put in my two cents on which ones are my all-time favorites for the Christmas season. These classics are sure to remind you and your loved ones of how lucky you are and what a gift it is to have such special people in your lives.
Without further ado, here are my Top 5 Christmas movies for every kind of taste:
1. Love Actually: With this romantic-comedy, you feel like you get Valentine’s Day and Christmas in one! There’s 8 story lines explored in this film, so there’s something for everyone. Some are more moving than others, but definitely have a tissue box prepared.
2. Nightmare Before Christmas: This Tim Burton masterpiece doesn’t fall under the conventional idea of Christmas film since it has a ghoulishly scary element, but don’t let that stop you from watching it with family. The underlying story/moral is beautiful and akin to when Scrooge realizes what Christmas really means. Plus the idea that there are “lands” for every holiday season is just too charming to pass up.
3. Miracle on 34th street: Though I may be one of the few who prefers the 1994 version of the film to the original black & white story, either movie is sure to satisfy your Christmas bug. It’s a strong reminder of why we loved Christmas as children since it focuses on the Santa Claus story and what miracles result from believing in him.
4. Elf: Meet Buddy the Elf. Ask him what his favorite color is – my favorite scene in this hilarious comedy! If you’re looking to share laughs with your group, then this Will Ferrell piece is sure to satisfy. Though some of the humor is pure silliness, it never crosses over to being too corny. Watch out for the absolutely beautiful duet scene in the bathroom between Buddy the Elf and his unsuspecting leading lady, Zooey Deschanel. They do a rendition of “Baby it’s cold outside.” Actually, it’s so good I’ll just include it below (along with some other cute snippets):
5. Scrooged: Of course some version of “The Christmas Carol” needs to be on this list. This modernization of the classic Dickens’ tale features Bill Murray who does a terrific job as the miserly TV exec Frank Cross. It’s sure to resonate with workaholics everywhere and remind them that there are more important things in life to focus on.
Enjoy spending time together with these special holiday films!
